My Resume
'How students learn' seems very overarching and generalist, as all of these pages in some way address this issue. However, I will start the discussion here!

I see assisting and promoting students' learning as the theme of my teaching. Everything I do, such as designing an engaging activity, or developing my understandings of students individual differences and needs through formative assessments, is done to make my teaching more effective.

While I try to impart my love of my subject areas constantly, I know that my students have differing levels of motivation for my subjects. To help them all engage with the learning activities in class, I try to connect the work to things outside the physical boundaries of the classroom.

Several examples:
  • When studying statistics, I would get students to collect their own data, and work with it to explore the mathematical concepts, rather than using the overly neat and simplistic data sets in the textbook. This then has a direct relationship to the students.
  • During the topic 'Holidaying in Indonesia' with my year 9 Indonesian class, we developed portfolios. I showed some of my numerous holiday pictures from my time in Indonesia, and enthusiastically discussed some of the tourist activities I participated in. Students then researched their own choices of places and activities, and developed their understandings of Indonesian culture, geography and the Indonesian vocabulary associated with holidays.
Examples of Student Work
As my Year 9 Indonesian students are still working on the Holiday topic, I haven't been able to bring some portfolios home to scan in. When I can, they will be added here.
