Being a teacher of two very different subjects highlights the interconnected nature of all subjects as VELS describes. If a maths task calls for answers in sentence form, such as problem solving tasks, I use this opportunity to remind students of the links to their English studies, and to literacy. Indonesian is always an integrated study for me, as the Indonesian language cannot be separated from its sociological and geographical context.

By acknowledging these contexts, and connecting student learning to things outside the four walls of their 'maths' classroom, I aim to create engaging, accessible and realistic learning opportunities for my students.

What MATHEMATICS means to me:
  • Maths is practical AND theoretical
  • I love working with calculus, as teaching it on my last rounds reminded me, but I also love being able to figure out discounts when shopping, scales when making something, and in the multitude of others ways that numbers appear throughout life.
  • Maths can be fun (see the fabulous pun on the How Students Learn page)- my enthusiasm for maths has positive effects on the learning environment and the lessons I create for my students. To this end, textbooks are NEVER the only resource used by students in my classes!

What INDONESIAN means to me:
  • The language and culture of any country are inextricably tied together, and through learning Indonesian, I have discovered a love of visiting Indonesia and interacting with the people, everyday life, and the experiences available to tourists who are willing to step outside the hotel. I have taught English in a secondary school in Makassar, Sulawesi, and stayed with a local family. (see also Professional Engagement)
  • I want to show others how diverse and interesting Indonesia is, so I bring back lots of resources every time I visit, and decorate the classroom with batik, posters and student's own work.
  • I find the Indonesian language fascinating. My own VCE Indonesian teacher helped me to fall in love with grammar. It is essential to express yourself clearly, and the patterns, rules, and logic fits well with the maths in me!
  • Learning a language brings about a sense of intercultural awareness and sensitivity - other perspectives and ways of understanding the world emerge in the words,  sentence structures and items of cultural significance.
